What’s in the box?!

As one month ends and another begins, we receive LOTS of boxes. Just published books, fresh out of the box are always exciting, and there’s been lots of paperback this week in time for some spring reading. We’ve picked out a few here that caught our eye.

In Endless Forms, Seirian Sumner invites us to explore the amazing world of wasps and discover this maligned insect in all its diverse, unexpected splendour; both as pollinator, and an essential worldwide pest controller.
Who were the Celts? Were they a people, a civilisation, an empire, or a fiction of historical imagination? Simon Jenkins’ insightful book Celts: A Sceptical History attempts to establish who the Celts were - or weren't.
Janina Ramirez’s Femina reveals the power and influence of medieval women who have been written out of our history and is a great addition to the current crop of excellent history books.

Our current book group read is When We Were Birds. Debut author, Ayanna Lloyd Banwo weaves an unforgettable story of magic and loss, love and hope in the imagined Trinidadian city of Port Angeles.
Meantime is full of scintillating dialogue and scalpel-sharp jokes. Not known to pull his punches, Frankie Boyle has delivered a compelling debut crime novel of murder and revenge.
Last year, no book created a bigger buzz than Lessons in Chemistry. In yet another fantastic debut, Elizabeth Zottas fights to overcome misogyny and inequality in 1960s America.

On the New Fiction table

It’s lovely to see our new fiction table filling up and we’ve picked out a few to mention…
It’s always a literary event when a new novel from the two-time Booker Prize finalist Sebastian Barry is published, and we currently have signed copies of his latest Old God's Time in the bookshop. The same can be said for Margaret Atwood, and while all our signed copies have been snapped up, Old Babes in the Wood, her dazzling collection of short stories is currently on offer in the bookshop.

We’ve been getting great feedback for The Cloisters by Katy Hays. A gothic novel of power, toxic friendship and ambition based around a once-thought lost deck of 15th-century Italian tarot card that has been compared to The Secret History. We are big fans of Benjamin Myers, so are excited to have signed copies of his latest novel. Myers is a uniquely talented writer and Cuddy, in which an Anglo-Saxon saint speaks down the centuries revealing Britain’s past is a very worthy addition to his oeuvre.
If you are looking for something with a local flavour, the author Kim Sherwood popped into the shop recently to talk about her novel of piracy and smugglers in 18th Century Devon. A Wild & True Relation opens during the Great Storm of 1703 and has been picking up some great reviews.
