The East Gate Bookshop Review Club

We receive lots of pre-publication ‘reading copies’ from publishers and although we’d like to - we can’t read them all.So, we have launched a Review Club, where we give out free review copies and ask for a short review in return. Reviews will feature here on our w ebsite, and alongside the relevant books on our shelves if appropriate.

Review copies would need to be collected in the bookshop on a first come first served basis. We've mapped out the basic structure below. This might change, but for now, this is how it will operate and we can always tweak as we go.

How do I join?

You can call into the shop and express your interest, or call us on 01803 865317, or email us using our contact form

Timings:

There will be a new selection of books to review from the 1st of each month.

How many books can I have?

Each reviewer can have a maximum of one book per month. To qualify for another book, you would need to provide a review for the book you took. You don't have to review a book each month, you can skip months if that's convenient.

How long should my review be?

To display your review in-store we will need it to be no more than 60 words. You can write a longer review and that would appear online in full, but we'd have to edit it down to 60 words for in-store use. You are welcome to use your review for any other purpose. e.g. Good Reads or similar. We can't accept hand written reviews. Reviews need you to be emailed as a Word doc. or straight onto an email.

Where will my review appear?

We can't guarantee using anybody's review; however, those we do, will be used in-store with the relevant book. Your review will also feature here on our website, and we may also use them, or part of them in our newsletter. We would like to credit the reviews with a first name (no last names). If you would rather use a pseudonym just let us know.

What is a 'reading copy'?

A 'reading copy' copy is an uncorrected edition (i.e. not read and corrected by a proofreader) of a book printed to low specifications as a review copy, it may not be exactly the same as the final printed edition. The aim of the publishers in producing these is to (hopefully) generate good reviews and positive word-of-mouth before the book is published. Only a small percentage of books are produced as proofs: these will be books that publishers are backing as having potential.

Reading Copies are not allowed to be re-sold, only circulated amongst readers.

How do I choose my book?

All the proofs will be available from the 1st of each month to browse and take one away. It's a first come first served basis, and you will have to visit the shop for your book. Unfortunately we cannot post out books to review. We will do our best to send a reminder email near the end of each month, that the new selection will be available soon.
