Our Story

Opening a bookshop during Covid restrictions might seem crazy…

With over thirty years experience in the book trade between us: from the shop floor to being part of a head office - combined with a life-long love affair with reading - opening a bookshop in our home town seems like what we are destined to do…

As well as a range of fiction and non-fiction titles from all genres, East Gate Bookshop has a comprehensive selection of books looking at the natural world: from nature writing to identification guides and books concerning environmental issues. We also have a strong focus on children’s books and are delighted to showcase local authors within our shop. We aim to create a community-minded shop reflecting the interests and passions of the people living in this thriving and unique market town.

Totnes Heritage, Short story competition

We were delighted to be involved in the short story competition run by Totnes Heritage during the summer of 2021. It was open to adults and children and stories were based on the characters on the fantastic Totnes Map. Beautifully realised by local artists, Anna Ventura and Claudia Schmid. There is even a poem to go alongside the map by Matt Harvey.

The standard of story writing was very high and the judges had a hard job chosing the winners. But after lots of deliberation the awards were announced…
